In 2009, this race was my first off road triathlon. I nearly won the swim that year, but I made a tactical error. This time, I made no errors and, finally, was first out of the water.
This race always hurts the first 15 minutes of the bike no matter how hard I seem to swim. I figured if I was in a position to win, I would take a risk. At the first buoy, I had the lead and a small gap to the next swimmer. I decided to go for it right then and there. I extended my lead and never let up. It paid off, and I didn't even sacrifice the rest of the race ending up 8th overall.
Here's a video of the race. I'm the 2nd from the left of the picture at the start and you can see me take the lead as we pass by the camera.
Thanks to Roka for getting me a brand new wetsuit just in time for the race.
Congrats to Josiah for winning. note: our run and swim splits add up to be within seconds of each other.... If only I could bike like him.
