Xterra Buffalo Creek (relay)
We camped the night before since this (used to be) a great site to camp and race. We were at the Wellington Lake Recreation area. The management was pretty rude to us as we checked in. (apparently, we were not the only ones receiving rude treatment) At the last minute the Wellington lake management made the race move to the other side of the lake, and also were kicking all the athletes out of their campsites at 1100am SHARP! This made us all have to break camp and DRIVE (instead of walking) to the race start as we couldn't get back to the campsites before 11am. The Wellington Lake Recreation management also wanted to charge ALL spectators a $5 day use fee and sign a waver regardless if we had camped the night before. In my 20+ years of racing experience, I've learned how to get around these silly rules, so we didn't pay extra. Regardless, this place is not a very "Xterra friendly environment" like in the past. We won't be returning to Wellington Lake in the future.
The race was still fun, and we placed 4th! My knee is was bugging me from my crash the previous week and that made for a comic run from the water to transition. Ben had to stop and raise his seat-post (he borrowed my bike) since he's a bit taller than me. Tina pushed the run pace past the "fun factor" so she slowed down toward the end and enjoyed it more, keeping her breakfast down in the process.
Two week from now is the Xterra Nationals in Snowbasin Utah. I've just started running, but still can't put any power into the pedals on my bike. :( We'll see how the next 2 weeks go before I decide to race. I've definitely lost some fitness, but I have a good base of conditioning to work with.
